How to Find a Mentor in the Vending Machine Business

Three real channels for finding a vending mentor, and how to spot the difference between an active operator and a course seller.

Search "vending machine mentor" and most of what comes back is generic small-business coaching advice that doesn't name a single specific channel. In practice, operators find real mentors through three paths: paid mentor-led communities, industry trade events, and informal relationships built through distributors or nearby operators.

1. Paid, mentor-led communities

The most direct path is joining a community built specifically around active operators teaching what they've learned — not a generic business mentorship program. Vending Circle runs a weekly live Masterclass where members bring real questions to five mentors, each with a defined specialty: Manuel Mojica on getting started, Jami Stufflebeam on locating and scale, Sean Coffey on equipment, Alondra Gaddis on school contracts and business development, and Scott Ziegler on operations and social media.

2. Industry trade events

Events like the annual NAMA Show put operators, distributors, and manufacturers in the same room. They're a legitimate way to build relationships, though they tend to skew toward established companies and suppliers rather than someone placing their first machine — and they happen once a year, not every week.

3. Informal relationships with distributors and nearby operators

Some operators build mentor-style relationships informally — with a distributor rep who's seen hundreds of routes, or another operator they met through a forum like The Vending Club. This works, but it's slow, dependent on who happens to be generous with their time, and rarely covers the full range of what a new operator needs to know.

How to tell a real mentor from someone just selling a course

  • Do they still run an active route? A mentor who hasn't operated in years is teaching theory, not current practice.
  • Will they get specific? Real numbers, real objection-handling, real machine problems — not just motivational framing.
  • Can you verify what they've built? Vending Circle's mentors list their actual businesses publicly — for example, Manuel Mojica's San Antonio operation and Sean Coffey's Twelve28 Vend.

FAQ

Do I need a mentor to start a vending machine business?
No — it's possible to learn independently. Most people who work with a mentor do it to shorten the timeline, not because it's required.

Is there a free way to find a vending mentor?
Informal relationships through forums and distributors are free but slow and inconsistent. Structured, paid mentorship trades cost for speed and consistency.

If you want to see what a structured mentor relationship looks like before committing, Vending Circle's 7-day free trial includes full access to the live Masterclass and all five mentors.

Landed my first location 🥰

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve landed my first location 🙌 It’s a small HVAC company with only eight employees, which isn’t ideal, but it has a lot of foot traffic due to shipment deliveries and customers. We’ll see how this goes. For now, I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity, and I want to give a big shoutout to Alondra Gaddis for her support throughout this process.

1st location incoming!

Don't want to get ahead of myself here, but I have a tentative "yes" for my first location! I'm meeting with the owner on Tuesday to verify a couple things, but it looks like after that the next question will be, "when can you get your machine installed?"
